| It is thought that the name of this great state originated from the word, "Tana-si." Tana-see is the Native American word for "the meeting place." Whether or not this is true, it is a fact that many Cherokee people inhabited the area before Europeans came through. |

| Called the "Volunteer State," Tennessee became the 16th state of the Union in 1796. It was the first territory admitted as a state under the federal Constitution. Before statehood, it was known as the Territory South of the River Ohio. The name Tennessee is derived from the name of a Cherokee village, Tanasi. Today, the capital, Nashville, is known as a center for country music. Memphis, the largest city in the state, is the place where Elvis Presley first began his legendary musical career. |

| A few fun facts about Tennessee include several that revolve around energy. Oak Ridge was where the atomic bomb, which was used against Japan, was built. To this day, Oak Ridge continues energy research, earning it the name "The Energy Capital of the World". |
| Tennessee also happens to be the "Turtle Capital of the World". This is because of the many species of turtles that inhabit the state. There are literally thousands of turtles in Reelfoot Lake, which include several different varieties such as stinkpots, mud, sliders, and map turtles. |
